By the Power of Learning!

So I’m taking an online class called “Creativity: Music to My Ears“, led by Tina Seelig, a Stanford professor who is dedicated to the notion that anyone can be creative, that it’s not a talent some possess innately. It started today, and after watching the first 20-minute lecture, I am incredibly inspired. One of the … Continue reading →

Working on Rule #1: Cardio

I may have gone a little insane because I’m a runner now. Let me ‘splain. I’m a fat kid. (It’s okay–I’m totally fine with it.) I’ve been a chubby kid since late elementary school, so for me, gym was something you endured, not something you sought out. But I’ve changed a lot of things in … Continue reading →

I take pictures of dumb things.

A year ago today, back in Tennessee, it snowed. A lot. I was taking photos of our Christmas tree when we decided to head outside to see how much snow we had gotten. It was the most snow I had seen in years. It was wet and heavy, and it knocked the power out. In our old, drafty house we had no central heat, so we had no power for the space heaters. We lit as many candles as we could to see if we could keep the house warm until the power came back on. Then it started getting dark, and the house was too cold, even under blankets. And if you’ve ever been in a snowstorm like this in the south, you know that if the power goes out and the roads are covered, it’s going to be that way for a while. So luckily we could go around the block to the local fire station to make dinner and spend the night. The next day power was still out, and I hit a breaking point. I decided that day that I didn’t want to be in that house in a year. And it wasn’t about the snow, per se. It was about the old house that had so many issues that I didn’t want to deal with or that I’d just have to live with. It was about not wanting to just get by. It was about not being in a hole of depression, like Leia in this photo. So thanks, giant snowstorm, for really pushing me towards the things that we wanted.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! I hope you all have a wonderful day, no matter how you celebrate. May you be surrounded by people who make you feel warm and happy. And if this is a hard day for you, I’m sending a big hug. It’s a bittersweet day for me, too.
I need to go take a shower. I need to go upstairs and put some things away. I probably need to start thinking about prep for tomorrow. But for right now, all I need to do is be near this little snugglebug.
